i need help finding out what is killing my small veggie garden. i keep finding my plants with the tops chopped off laying beside the stems.... nothing is eating the leaves or the stems and there are no pawprints in the dirt. i am new to gardening and trying to keep this as organic as possible... if anyone has any suggestions i would really appreciate some help!

since the plants have been in the ground for a while would you think putting sticks around the stalks will be helpful or do you have any other suggestions?
thanks!

This is kind of time consuming-but if you can slip a ring of some sort over your plant and lightly into the ground, that may deter them until the get too big for the cutworms. (You know, a can cut out of both ends, or make a ring of cardboard, or the like.

I agree, sounds like cutworms. Along with using a type of collar (the cans or plastic bottles with ends cut off, paper towel or toliet paper tubes, etc.) try sprinkling a substance around the plants such as: crushed eggshells, unscented (clay)cat litter, shredded oak leaves, wood ashes, animal or human hair, chicken manure. Cutworms won't slink over a scratchy/rough like surface that prickles their skin. Good luck!
