My neighbor has a pretty green thumb, but he is also a bit lazy with his gardening projects. For instance, he has a greenhouse full of neglected plants, most of which have the potential to be absolutely beautiful! He was thinning out his overgrown and malnourished peace lilies, and he gave me an armful of tall, light green plants. I know they are supposed to be dark green and blooming, and these plants were neither. But I didn't really know what to do with them. So I got online, and found lots of conflicting information.

I put five or six plants into a tall vase full of water with a bit of transplant fertilizer, since that was all I had. They have all done great so far. Most of them are in dirt now, and I have given some of the nicer ones away.

My question is, does anyone know the best fertilizer for this plant? I would love to know if anyone has experience with these house plants, since I am basically experimenting with them right now. I really would like them to bloom, and they are still not completely dark green. I know almost nothing about synthetic fertilizers, as they have almost always seemed unnecessary until now! My gut feeling is that they are lacking in nitrogen, but again, I don't know the best way to give that to a house plant. HELP?

I do give mine liquid miracle grow for house plants in the spring and summer. Also, the potting mix I use has some miracle grow in it. I repot mine every couple of years.

I never had any luck with them. Either too hot, too cold, too wet, too dry, too dark, too light. I had one bloom and that was it. It finally bit the dust.

Mine blooms almost every year, though I had it about 2 years before that happened. Mine is pretty much root bound (cause I need a REALLY big pot for it, and I don't have one)and has been for a while. I keep it in mid-deep shade, and water often. I, too, fertilize with miracle gro several times during the summer. This plant is also called a "closet plant", because it will grow in deep shade.

So I just use regular Miracle Grow for house plants? Why is it that the simple things seem to be the most difficult for me! Thank you!

I did realize that they like the shade when I had them outside during Spring cleaning. They weren't happy with me at all! I have really been trying to get these guys to grow, so I was disappointed when they got wilted from too much sunlight. Hopefully they don't crap out on me.

Thanks for the advice ya'll!

I take a handful of worm castings and place it in a bucket with some warm water and let it sit for a couple hours then water all my plants indoor and out with it...the best organic fertiliser you can get, it works wonders for the health and growth of all plants.

I actually am working on my own worm bin right now so i dont have to buy the castings anymore.

If you happen to enjoy fish (the tropical kind), I use the water that I take out of my tanks every two weeks to water all my houseplants, and they all flourish. My peace lily blooms occasionally, and I have tried it in varying light - it likes less rather than more - but I don't mist it frequently, and it is sposed to like humidity.

Some summers I put mine out in the shade and leave it. They love that. MotherGoss, I use miracle grow that is made for house plants. I dont know how it compares to the outdoor kind, or even if it makes a difference.

You are all so helpful! Thank you for the advice!

I do have a fish tank, and it has never occurred to me to water the plants with the old tank water! BRILLIANT!

Here is an update: I have potted all of the plants, and they are all happy campers right now. One of them is blooming! None of them went into shock from being pulled out of water and being stuck right into dirt. I should have taken a picture. I will do that later, I promise...

Thank you again!

Peace Lily is the plant that was popular a few years ago to put in a fairly large vase with a Siamese Fighting Fish. Made a nice display. When my fish died I did pot the lily with some success but I am not much of a house plant person. African Violets are the only plant I keep most of the time. LB
