It took me 3 years of putting hummer feeders up with no hummers before they finally found them, and now they come back every year. Now I want to attract Baltimore Orioles - when I stopped in a local birding shop last summer and asked how to, I was told to wait until spring when they are migrating north and establishing their territory. My backyard is boxed in by trees, and my understanding is that they will be attracted to the orange feeder as long as it is not tucked underneath the trees - is that correct? I'm in zone 5, so depending on when they come through, the leaves may not yet be fully on the trees...any suggestions?

When I lived in WI we always had these ~ I don't see them much here in KY. What we used to do is take a large nail (about 3" long or so) and pound it into the top of a wood feeder or an old tree branch, then slice an orange in half and stick it onto the nail (cut side up, of course). I have also heard that they like grape jelly. My friend nails metal jar lids to her fence and puts grape jelly in them. I can just see the ants I would have if I tried that

I bought a feeder last year that has cups for the grape jelly and a spike for the orange - I will just do what I did for my hummers - put it out earlier than I think and keep it fresh until they come....

Hey ~ another tip for ya. I was talking to a friend who is pretty much a bird expert and I told her about your post. She said another thing to keep in mind is that orioles like things high up. Just think about how they build their little bag nests ~ so high up in the trees. So she said to make sure you find a higher point to locate your oriole feeders. I know this sounds like a difficulty but it's something to think about when you place it.

I have put out grape jelly for the first time this year. Orioles aren't expected until first week in May, however, my finches are eating the jelly. Is this normal?

Welcome to GG, ct! Yes, I think this is normal. Someone else mentioned that the finches were visiting her hummingbird feeder for the nectar. Apparently they like some "dessert" too
