I have two ferns outside. I'm not sure what kind they are but they look like boston ferns. I trimmed all of the dead leaves off and they are putting out new ones. My question is: What are the hard ball like things around the bottom of the plants? Some are kindof brown, and others are light green. When I saw one, I thought it was a snail but then I realized it was part of the plant. Kim |

Those are the new fronds that haven't unfurled yet. Watch them and you'll see them uncurl upwards - they look like the end of a violin, that's why they call them fiddleheads. Sounds like your ferns are very healthy and ready to really fluff out. Unless you live in a very warm spot, bostons won't have survived the winter. Can you post a pic? |
