I love asparagus. We are doing raised beds. Can anyone tell me what I can plant with it? I am limited on the space and I am planting lettuce, carrots, beans (bush), tomatoes, peppers, green onions, squash, basil, and cilantro.

When I was a young girl my dad had asparagus and it spread all over the place. Maybe he planted to much.

I've never had a stand of asparagus, but I sure wish that I did. I don't know much about them, but aren't they a perennial? Once you have a stand of it, it comes back every year? I could be wrong about that!

I don't think that I am going to have good luck with asparagus. I have googled it and it take some time. I will plant it but it takes a year to get a good harvest. Oh, well. I will learn something!!!
Yes, I think it is. I'm going to try it!! We usually buy it twice a week and I think this will cut down on our expience. Hopefully.

Kim,
I've have asparagus I started from seed. My bed is about 20' square. Each year the edible part (spears) come from wider out into the space between the rows. The first year you'd probably get by with planting other things among the plants but eventually the tops (ferns?) will shade out the sun-lovers you try to grow between the rows.
From seed it takes about three years before you can selectively cut some spears. Some must go to top to supply the underground portion of the plant.
You can buy 3-year old roots this time of year that will probably give you a limited crop next year. Patience.
On another note, I noticed the dimensions of your raised beds. Mine are 5' wide and 25' long. That way, I can reach to the middle from either side, utilize less building materials and have more useable space for garden.
Questions?

Thanks, Fritz for the advice. I have given up on the thought, for now of growing asparagus. I really love it but I just can't make my beds any bigger right now.

We rent this house and are very limited on the space that we have. Maybe someday we will live on a bigger place of our own. I will cretainly have other questions about other things. Kim

@ floridagirl:Do not harvest the asparagus during the planting year. Spears will be produced from expanded buds on the crown. As the spears elongate and reach a height of about 8 to 9 inches, the tips will open. The spear will become woody to support the small branchlets that become ferns. The ferns produce food for the plant and then move it down to the crown for next year's spear production. from this page: http://ohioline.osu.edu/hyg-fact/1000/1603.html
I am planting some this year a neighbor has some growing very well. I think it will do well for us *fingers crossed* Interesting reading on that site about harvesting.

tx how is your asparagus doing? We planted 3-10ft raised beds quite a few years ago. We really didn't know how tall and thick it would be for the whole summer. This spring we decided to move it. Hahahaha! The entire bed was so packed with like a solid mass of 'crown' from one end of the bed to the other. I'm not real strong, but I was practically sitting on the shovel handle bouncing. Broke the shovel! I decided to wait and let the hubby deal with it. He is VERY strong and it was still a big job for him. We had more than plenty crown pieces to share with a few friends and we still didn't get it all moved. I hope yours gives you many, many years of delicious harvests!
