I know that garlic helps keep the aphids away. I've also read that pennyroyal keeps almost any bad bug imaginable away (including mosquitos!). There's a whole chart of companion plants in the herb section under "plants" on this website. Might want to check it out.

Pennyroyal causes cancer if you eat it or drink tea from it. Otherwise, it's supposed to work as well as OFF.

Garlic is great with roses. You were also right about chives. Oregano is also good. Oh, and roses love Rue. I had read about rue and roses....last year or year before. I now have rue planted with several of my roses. Not only are the roses doing well, but the Rue is huge. If you are doing true companion gardening, roses and tomatoes also work well together. This all reminds me that I have yet to transplant my climbing rose.....Gotta get that done.

Rocambole is also a fun companion for roses. I just love their curlicues.
