I feel really bad. Because we have had to cut back on so much with the current economy, we have greatly reduced our budget for birdseed and food for the wildlife. This really bothers me because I love so much to feed the birds. Does anyone have any penny-wise solution to my dilemma? Anything home-made that would be a cheaper but beneficial alternative? |

In the blogs, Motherbored has a recipe for homemade bird seed using cornmeal, etc. Also, peanut butter smeared in a pine cone and rolled in bird seed is good, too. Hang from a tree, etc. |

This is called Bluebird Pudding, but other birds seem to like it. 2 cups water 1 cup quick grits (not instant) 2-4 TBSP butter 1/4 cup crunchy peanut butter. Mix water, grits, and butter in sauce pan. Cook down until very thick like a ball. Allow to cool a few minutes before adding peanut butter. Mix together, roll into balls, and serve! |

dirtwitch, I buy a sack of the cheapest bird seed i can find and mix it with black oil sunflower seeds because the sparrows seem to like it better .The 2nd way i save a little money is cover the platform feeder with hardware cloth so the seed stays in the tray and not on the ground. My main feeder is under a roof to keep the feed dry. |

Love the grit recipe.Everytime I wonder about an ingredient one of you darlings answer my question.I always have grits in the cupboard.I made squirrel baffles out of pots,it cost nothing and keeps those squirrels off my feeders, they did figure out how to get up on one of the poles I had baffled by climbing on a shed, so I put saflower in the gravity feeder and thistle in the other, they are not interested in that seed. This is saving me alot of money in seed and the squirrels eat what is dropped opposed to emptying the feeders in 3 minutes!!! |
