You know how they send you 10 free trees when you send a donation to Arbor Day Foundation? Well, we just got ours to plant here in southern Virginia.

My husband planted them 4 days ago. We have that really heavy clay soil. We did add a little Miracle Gro Tree & Shrub soil to it. Hope that was ok.

Any suggestions on the best way to cover these delicate little trees up? We don't get too much really bad weather but it does go below freezing a few times in the winter. The last time we put the Arbor Day trees in it was spring time.

For now we put chicken wire around them, and put some leaves over them. Is there anything better?

We also have a problem with a lot of deer. They ate the other trees up pretty good. And those were just starting to grow nicely (about two and half years in).

Sounds like you have covered your bases. just be sure to water, I know it is the middle of winter, and freezing cold. However cold weather can kill just as fast as hot weather. Now if the trees came to you bare root, then the water is not necessary. Just keep the leaves over them to protect from cold wind, come next spring you will be set. Best of luck, T-N-J Trees.

Thanks, tnjTrees. Yes they came bare root. Also I think it's been raining ever since we planted them. Just hope they don't drown now!

I think that would be impossible. Now when they are in a veg stage, or not dormant. then yes they need good oxygen to their roots for optimal osmosis. However good water now, Even if it does freeze will just moisten and protect them that much more. And give them that much more of a head start come next spring.
