Ok Im adding on to my garden. I took the 6' x 20' long 1 1/2 year old horse barn compost pile, a 10 cubic yard load of year old wood chips(half rotten) and that roll of moldy hay. I layered it over the area, Tilled the area both ways. It's been three weeks and I want to add 2-3" oak leaves and another load of Horse barn manure and Roto-till that area again. I have some old rye grass seeds, Should I throw them over that area and grow some green manure to till in. Should I take the soil sample Now ? . if the soil needs Lime, doing the sample now (takes ten days to get the results back) would let the Lime have time to work for my Febuary/March planting here in Zone 9 Central Florida. This is a nother long one but telling whats going on takes extra words, Just Gardening -Guilt Trip |

I would take a sample now to see if lime is needed-then take another just before you plant. That gives the lime time to work, and if you need other ammendments, they will work quicker. What part of Florida are you in? |
