I have an orange tree that produces very small, bitter tasting fruit. The stem are also very thorny, to the point you have to wear gloves if you want to pick the fruit. I am clueless when it comes to citrus. Any help identifying? Attachments: ![]() ![]() |

Nice tree! It is likely a sour orange tree. They are excellent for making marinades. Try and post a more close-up picture of the fruits. If the skin is wrinkly or bumpy, it's a sour orange. |

I would venture to say it is the bitter orange...too bad. I'm no good at making preserves. Maybe I can find someone local who would appreciate the fruit more than me. Thanks for the response. Hey, how much rain did you guys get? |

Here are a couple of close ups. The ones in my hand were picked up off the ground this morning. They really don't get much bigger than that. The skin is somewhat smooth as well. Attachments: ![]() ![]() |

They seem pretty smooth to be sour oranges... maybe you should take some to a local nursery and see what they have to say. f they are indeed sour oranges, you can use them to marinate meats the same way you would use a lemon or lime. No need to make preserves.. just pick, slice, and squeeze. |

I'll have the compost man look at them when he gets here tomorrow. He is a born and raised Alachua boy, so maybe he'll know. Thanks for all the help! |

Come to think of it...maybe you are experiencing Citrus Greening as well. I have the guy coming by tomorrow. I don't have the phone number I called with me right now, but I can get it for you if you want to have your tree checked out. |

Awfully nice to offer, but I'm several hundred miles north of you and my pocketbook say, no maam, no way. I might take a cut branch with some fruit on it to a farmer's market next week and see if any of the locals might know. Seriously, that was sweet of you to offer. Thanks.
