good morning to all from coastal Georgia. A friend gave me this seed pod the other day, but couldn't remember the name of the plant. any ideas? the pod is the size of a small chicken egg.

Was this from a tree? Or a small shrub? Is it kind of prickly? My alamanda makes a seed pod like that. When it dries, it cracks open down the center to release the seeds. Sweet gum make a seed pod like that, too. They just turn brown and don't crack open. I'll take a pic of my alamanda seeds this pm and post for reference.

YAY!!! You have right there a lovely datura of some sort, looks just like my purple horn of plenty or Devil's trumpet. Awesome flowers. They get pretty tall in the sun, ours got between 9 and 10 feet. They look like small trees with shiny ebony black stems, large dark green leaves and big showy trumpet flowers that make the whole yard smell good. It could be a different variety of course. And they're all poisionous.

What Aimee said! In my zone, a prolific re-seeder!! The flowers are pretty and smell good at night-not so good during the day. I had one in the ground that grew to about 5 ft in height with many, many blooms. This year I have one in a pot and it is struggling, but I didn't have a good place to put it in the ground this year.

That's so funny -- ! Mine smell the same all the time

My plants got really tall but only had maybe 5 - 10 flowers at a time. I think next year I'll try clipping them back a bit and see if they bush out and give me more blooms.

I know there are different types of datura, but mine looks very much like your picture-but during the day, it really does...well...stink!
