Those are planted in yards all over town around here. I have one in my yard. It makes "pups" that are so easy to transplant! Kind of prickly, though.

I sure wish I could plant it in my yard, not in the right zone, darn it. Oh, yessss they are prickly, very prickly! It is a challenge getting it in and out of the house without it touching you.

Ryan what I used was Miracle Gro, and some sand. This plant was and is the hardest plant I have ever transplanted in my life because of the needle like leaves, dang thing. Usually with tranplanting , you want to loosen up the roots, spread them out and so on. With this I didnt do that i just transferred one from another. Good luck with yours

Ryan take it out of the pot as carefully as you can, just the way it is. With this type of palm I chose to go with a pot that has depth in it, rather then circumference (sp). If you have a pic of it, post it so we can see exactly what your dealing with. Roots can be sticking out of it, wrapped all around it, and you can still get it out of the pot, just be careful. Its really not delicate. I encountered the same problems with mine, twice already. You do need to make sure after its transplated, that all the roots are in the soil. As long as the roots are in and you have taken all the air out of the soil it should be fine. Taking the air of the soil is.. fill the pot halfway, water and tamper it, add more soil and repeat, until you get the pot all filled up. I hope that this info helped you. You can do it Ryan.

It is also just fine to cut the roots coming out of the bottom of the pot as they may not be viable being out in the open for so long.
as for the photo above, that is a beautiful sago. many years growth there.
