Witt - I don't think it's too late at all! I was still gathering in October last year, and I planted the ostrich fern, which I bought at a nursery before finding a bunch of wild ones this spring, grrrr, in I think october or november.

Thanks for the compliments, I'm happy with my ferns, especially the wild ones. I wish I had more room, but that big tree/bush back there is a mock orange, and anything I plant close to it doesn't do well.

I went to Walmart this morning, not really expecting to see any ferns. I was mistaken. They had loads of ferns, but not one was cold hardy.
I think that I am going to transplant my two "woods" ferns to the Old Gourd Garden and maybe even one of those vining/climbing ones that I have. I sure wish that I had a garden buddy who had some outdoor fern babies that they could share. Wish me luck with my transplanting.

Don't laugh too hard, but here are my two pitiful ferns. I transplanted them on July 29. I guess this picture will be my before picture. That's a columbine in between. The one on the right was almost dead. It only has one frond left.

Loving all the ferns! I have a few different types around the yard can anyone tell me what this one is?

Only that it is beautiful. Ferns are so graceful, I think.

Can't be sure, but that looks like some sort of lady fern, Felix feminina - or maybe not. I have lots of ferns but I'm not an expert on identifying them by a long shot.

Witt, I think your cute baby ferns will do fine. If you want more cold-hardy ferns, I suggest taking a walk in the woods in early April, before all the brambles and honeysuckle cover everything, and you will find all the babies you want.
