I am still relatively new to gardening since I bought my home (Long Island, NY)a few years ago so I have a LOT TO LEARN! I cleared the jungle that was my backyard at the time I moved in, grew a nice lawn with (surprisingly) no dandelions and am just loving working on the landscaping. I noticed that there are a few different types of groundcover that I would like it preserve rather that replace with lawn. One in particular is very pretty - with narrow green leaves - 1-2" in length and about 1/3 to 1/2" wide. The flowers are pink that have tiny blooms. I have not been able to identify it as yet. There is another type that look like microscopic daisies about 1/4" in size. I am hoping that someone can help me identify them. Thanks in advance for any info you can provide! Weeds!!! I don't know the names but I know they are weeds. The pink one in particular, although it IS pretty, will go ALL OVER in anything else you want to plant. Now that it has flowered, it will go to seed and you may have more than you bargained for. With that happy news welcome to GG, gina! You can learn a lot here.

Thank you all!! Especially EvonneStoryteller. I looked up those links and I believe that you are right. My question now is should regard these plants as pests and should I try to eliminate them from my yard? Thank you again! Gina

We have the pigweed - we call it lady's thumb here - in our lawn. Yes it does go everywhere, and we pull it out of the landscaping all the time. But in the lawn we just mow over it. Right now in the fall when the grass is sparse and dry and we don't have to mow often it does great. It flowers and adds some pretty color to our backyard! I'll get some pictures tomorrow. I like my plants and landscaping fine, but I've never been a "LAWN" person. I don't care what kind of grass is out there. I don't care if there's zoysia in my bluegrass. As long as it covers the dirt I'm fine. Half of our backyard in the shade is pennywort and creeping charlie. I don't care - it's pretty and lush looking and doesn't get seedheads on it like grass does. It depends on what YOU consider a good looking groundcover!

I agree with you, Aimee! My hort agent (who is a turf grass specialist ~ yawn) is an avid this-grass-or-that-grass fan. I always tell him that I don't have grass ~ just green stuff that we mow. Don't care what it is either as long as the dogs can poop on it .Oh, but now I have at least four new names for that pink stuff. |
