Hi,
I am new to gardening and I am trying to start a container garden in my flat. Is it a completely ridiculous idea to try and start a little compost heap, maybe outside in the grounds of our flat? How long do you have to leave it before it can be used and would using compost just stink out the flat?

The length of time that it requires to become compost varies with what you put in, moisture, etc. Completely composted material doesn't stink and it shouldn't ever stink. It smells like good rich earth.

Welcome Liz! I sure enjoyed your photos!

Part of the "art" of composting is retaining moisture, warmth, and ODOR in the compost - as opposed to letting any one of them escape. So it's quite difficult to compost on a small yet efficient scale. You're not going to have much success on a small scale without some kind of container to confine your materials and limit air flow. I've seen some composting products with just a few liters' capacity, but at that size you will have to be very diligent about proper combination of materials and maintaining moisture and aeration.

If you're not ready for that kind of commitment, you might end up with a stinky mess.

Stereoman makes it sound like composting is a deep relationship! Actually, it kind of is....
How much space do you have to devote for compost? There are lots of smaller composters available for sale now, I'm sure one of them could work for you...
It almost sounds as though vermiposting (worm farming) may be a good choice for you too.
