My neighbor was digging up their yucca and asked if I wanted it. Of course I said yes, but I had to be the one to dig it up. Little did I know this plants root zone, tubar or bulb..whatever it is was such a pain in my bahooky. It was sooo huuuuge I contemplated in just letting it be. After about three hours my hubby was getting a little agitated (to say the least) haha. Well, he got it out. My question is, there are so MANY starts from it, new growth that were under the dirt of it. I want to divide it and I wanted to know will it hurt the yucca, and one more question, is there male and females in yucca plants? |

I could have told you in advance that yucca is a bee-yatch to get out of the ground. Since you know that now, make sure you plant it where you want it to stay ! Also, dividing is the way to go ~ I don't think you can kill this stuff. Blooms best in full sun and is a good plant for dry areas (which is good since we haven't had any rain for months ~ maybe today??).

You got that right!!! It was such a pain. I am so glad that you told me, you better put it where you want it and keep it there. I do have another question tho. Is there anything a person has to do to promote the bloom I have seen from them. Only thing is, this one has never bloomed that I have seen. It is over ten years old. Thanx for any info you can give me..

I was told the only way to get rid of yucca was to move. |

I have heard that yucca does not bloom if it receives too much water ~ keep it high and dry!! Should be easy around here

I suppose that was his way of telling me it's time to move Last year we chopped about 6 feet or so from the top and began to dig up the roots, but they were not going anywhere so we left it. New leaves sprouted from the areas that were cut and so it is still in the back yard... |

Oh my gosh, that is so flippin funny! Well where we dug it up at, was like diggin through concrete and half-way through china. All i can do is sit back and wait to see if it was all the hassle..lol I sure hope it was because I had to convince the hubby to keep diggin. So yuccas get pretty big (as in heighth)? |

The ones my mom has are about 3 to 6 feet tall depending on how buried in other plants they are so I think light condition is a factor. I brought 2 dried stalks home loaded with seeds that are about 4 feet tall. Out in Arizona they get a lot bigger. I think that's where these came from originally about 25 or 30 years ago. |
