Hi all, I'm a new poster so was unsure which forum was most applicable for my question. I have some nice perennial beds under a pine tree. About this time each year the pine tree sheds tons of needs. Usually I rake them up before adding my annual 1" compost to the beds. But I got to thinking...would it be fine if I just left them there and added the compost on top? It sure would save tons of work. I don't have all acid lovers in the bed--I have Wallflower, Hardy Fuchsia, saxifrage, Hosta, Lilies, Columbine, Jacob's ladder, Japanese anemone, Crocosmia, Aucuba, Hydrangea, some ferns and some others. Do you think they'll be fine if I add the compost over the pine needles? Or am I making a big mistake? Thanks! |

Won't hurt the plants I'd rake them up, put the compost down, then reapply them as mulch- just me ![]() Oh- and this was the perfect place for that question

The needles on the bottom will eventually decompose. Put the compost on top now and let the needles fall over that. Then you'd be done with half the work. |

I just sold my horses. I have some protein pellets, sweet feed,(molasses, corn, etc) and crimped oats left (all horse feed). Can I use those ingredients in my compost pile? |

Welcome to the new composters. First, I don't see why you can't put the compost over the pine needles. The needles eventually decompose anyway. The horse rations shouldn't hurt the compost pile in my opinion. |

I don't think so either. I just wanted more opinions. Thanks!
