I found this plant growing in my mom's flowerbed near the "infamous" magnolia tree. I just plucked a leaf and I'm trying to figure out whether to dig it out and permanently be rid of it or dig it out and stick it in my yard. So far it's just grown the past couple months and it's about 3 to 4 feet tall. Any help is much appreciated. I'm in zone 5 on Lake Erie. Attachments: ![]() |

http://www.sfrc.ufl.edu/4h/RedMulberry/RedMulberry .htm Are the leaves different on the tree? Mulberry trees have some leaves like that. |

It certainly looks like a mulberry of some type; the leaves can be variable. I would guess it to be White Mulberry, which is a non-native tree. http://www.uwgb.edu/BIODIVERSITY/herbarium/trees/m oralb_branch01.jpg |

The red mulberry looks very close. My neighbor has a mulberry tree so maybe that's how it ended up there. More info welcome if anyone wants to contribute. Thank you both! That's the most I've ever known about mulberries! |

Unless you want it there forever, kill it now. They are HARD to kill. I would cut it off as close to the ground as possible and coat with straight tri-ox every few days for about 4 treatments. Once they take hold they are almost impossible top kill and their wood is so hard it will dull a chain saw. I LOVE them in there place but not in their place they are a nightmare. |

Oh boy. This sounds like it's going to be a fun time- NOT. Mom already has one plant that refuses to give up in there so now she's got another one. Thanks for all the advice. |

We got rid of a couple last year, they had been cut all the way down before and just kept coming back. We cut it off at ground level, coated it with brush killer, 5 holes, covered it with stump killer while it was still wet from the brush killer a week later we poured kerosene in the holes, this past Spring, the largest one had a sprout!!! I chopped it off and coated it with brush killer again. That was the only one that still showed signs of life this year. Hopefully it is finally dead. They grow like mad..... |

After examination today I realized that was the same thing I'd battled before. Some of the branches I cut back like when you want a tree branch to die and some of the larger stalks I bared a ring around. I hauled the rest out to her burnpile. I ended up weeding the whole flowerbed. |
