I've been wondering about these for years! They're everywhere at this time of year and appear at the left side of this photo of an aster. Anyone know what they are?

Sorry, folks, for the GIGANTIC-looking aster in the photo and the confusion! Although I guess there are miniature asters, but as someone pointed out, the petals are shaped differently.

Here's a close-up, working with the original, MSPaint and GIMP (even Word will let you edit photos...to an extent, which I did):

What the original poster has is an Aster. New England Aster (original name Aster novae-angliae, now Symphyotrichum novae-angliae) is one of the more popular one and has been hybridized into many colors.

I think she's asking about the smaller aster-like flowers to the left and background of the purple aster that is center stage.

Oh dang! Well, there are so many asters, perhaps it is just a different kind?

sorry I don't see it the little flowers in the background have bigger petals than an aster right? that is the flower in question not the big pink one...

Sorry for the confusion...that aster was kind of dominant--I posted a closeup of the daisy-like flower...but it's pretty fuzzy. In my search online, I found LOTS of miniature daisies, but they ALL had yellow centers! That African daisy looks like the most likely one, though they're all over my yard like weeds!
