Ha, nope, even I'd pass on those! I do think they're cool though! Of course I was going to attempt to identify them just for fun but: whatever they are they're very mature and breaking down so you can't see most of the ID characteristics and They're "LBMs" - little brown mushrooms. Even experts have trouble id-ing them because they all look the same and most of 'em are NOT anything you want to eat anyway! |

Oh darnit I'm obsessive I swear. Coprinopsis atramentaria. The way they are disolving into black goo made me think "Inky Cap", and after looking it up I believe that's what they are. Some members of this family, like the shaggymanes, are edible, but you gotta get them before they start, well, disolving into black goo. Unless it's for halloween dinner! And if the urge strikes you to eat one, don't drink alcohol for a couple days! One common name for this shroom is "tippler's bane" because it contains a chemical that interacts with alcohol with temporary but unfortunate results.

I nominate Aimee our Mushroom Expert! Is "Black goo" a technical term?

Ha, thanks for the compliment -- but if I were an expert I'd be hanging with the big fungus boys over at the mycological site. Those guys are CRAZY!! Can't understand a darn word they say. And mycological texts are even worse. Sure "Black Goo" is a tehnical term! For me anyway. Along with "root ball thingie", "seedpod thingies", and "Dirt".

Thanks for the info! That is definitely interesting! I purchased these gourds at a farm stand today. They remind me of extra footed bird-like creatures. Attachments: ![]() ![]() |
