Kind of hard to tell, but if it has a yellow belly, it could be some sort of King Snake. Good snake! |

My sister who lives in Cumming, GA and works at the Georgia Aquarium thinks depending on the head shape it is probably a banded water snake or possibly a cottonmouth (venomous). Below is a good snake resource http://www.uga.edu/srelherp/snakes/index.htm Hope this helps. She is a zooaologist so she better know what she's talking about. She would be the one to pick it up and check out. I, however, would be the one screaming and running the other way!

Thanks for all your replies, the vote seems to be for a banded water snake and I agree. the snake's head was oval in shape, so I am hoping that it was NOT a cottonmouth. smr |
