Is my insect a dasymutilla occidentalis 'velvet ant', 'cow killer'? I read it's a wasp but I didn't see wings on mine Could it be something else? Real pretty insect.

I was just reading about those the other day when I was looking up cicada killer wasps! The females don't have wings.

Careful! On the scale of "painfulness of insect stings" it's ranked a 3 out of 4 - more painful than a honeybee sting, but less painful than a tarantula. LOL cold comfort.

The red velvet ant is not an ant at all but a type of wasp with a wicked sting.
