Anybody else here into fungus??? It's september and we actually had a RAINY day this week for the first time in a month... and that means... FUNGUS!!!!! It'll be awhile before the wild oysters pop out, we have the best luck finding those in late fall and early winter warm spells. But puffballs should be puffing up here soon, and I'm on the lookout for field boletes. Siiigh, I wish I lived in an area where there were chanterelles.... |

No, I don't know that much about it. It would be my luck to eat a poisonous one and be found in the woods with fungus on my lips. |

LOL could be worse things.... Guess nobody here's really into mushrooms. I've looked at some sites dedicated to fungus but they're so scientific! I don't know what half of what they're talking about means. |

The only mushroom I can ID consistently is a Morel....and Morel season is WAAAAAY past. Well, I do believe I can recognize a puff ball too....what do they taste like and how do you usually prepare them? |

Puffballs taste sort of like a mushroom, sort of like scrambeled eggs, and have the texture of a firm marshmellow. It's a little weird. I just slice them, dip them in egg and flour, and fry them. If you haven't gathered them before be careful - some other species look like puffballs when they emerge, before they open up. Cut it straight down the middle and make sure it is pure white all the way through. Better yet, get someone who knows fungus to take a look at anything you're gonna eat! I found a coral mushroom last year for the first time. By all accounts they are safe edibles with no look-alikes, although my sources said they occasionally cause "mild intestinal upset" in some people. I cooked a little bitty bit. I had one little bite and thought it was delicious. My roomate ate the tiniest sliver, thought it was delicious, and had to run and throw up an hour later. We get Morels in the spring (I only found TWO this year, what a bust), and we really look forward to the wild oysters in late fall. We get tons of those and dry them in the dehydrator. |

Fungus is cool. I can't identify them worth a darn, and I actually don't like eating them either LOL! But they can be really neat looking

Yeah, I get really excited over the weird ones even if I can't eat them. That stinkhorn post had me excited for days. Ha. Whenever I go for a hike I throw my Audubon mushroom field guide in my backpack in case I see something I don't recognize. |
