Anyone know what this might be? It appears to have a small stem on the top, maybe its some kind of tropical fruit? One of my mom's students gave it to her, but no explanation of where it came from. Reminds me of one of those bumpy balls that fall off of the gum trees.

Osage Orange is exactly what it is. We call them Hedge apples from the hedge trees. Its said that if you bring one of those in the house and if you have fleas it will make the fleas dissapear. I dont think it actually works, but you never know.

Cool, thanks for the info. Was hoping it might be edible, but from what I gather, there's nothing but latex sap in it. Oh well, fun to look at nonetheless

It's a jackfruit! It's a tropical fruit and it is delicious. We have some in our yard in the Philippines. They grow over 2o lbs and it smells really good when ripe. Go to an oriental store or a Filipino store and you will find some in a jar. You can taste it yourself.

Hedge apples! Or Osage Orange-whatever you prefer, we've got 'em all over our place. The wood is great for fence posts because it lasts a long long time. I've heard that about the bug deterrent but I heard it was for cockroaches, supposed to get rid of them. I don't have cockroaches, so I don't know if it works or not. Our cows eat them, but if you've read any of my blogs, you know our cows eat anything! One cow didn't chew well, and it choked her.
