Be prepared to melt

Early one morning, while watering my garden, I noticed that I was being watched.

I eventually realized that a family of Grey Fox had invaded the groundhog den (under one of my buildings) that causes me grief.

I got my camera, and was lucky to lure these kits out with some leftover chicken. I was sitting about 5 feet from them, and although they were very nervous, they couldn't resist the food.

I soon realized that there were a few of them, and judging by the growling going on under the building, they were fighting over the "bait".

Those are just adorable! Are you going to keep them? With so many woods being cut out around me, I just feed whatever animals show up-far away from the house of course!

The long story is....I keep a live trap in front of that hole. I catch about 10 groundhogs/summer, and relocate them to my friend's property.

They make their lair under this bldg., and they come out to raid my gardens. I've been trapping them for years. One morning, I heard a horrible sound coming from the trap...it was a baby fox. I released it, but kept the trap in the shut position, in front of the building...I didn't want my cats to explore under there.

That's when I first realized that they were there. I was torn, but I decided it was wise to keep from trying to tame/encourage them.

These pics were taken about 1 month after I first trapped the first one. I was watering, and saw the little face peeking from behind the closed trap.

They've since moved on. Sadly, I saw one (the mother?) dead in the road...hit by a car.

Both parents raise the kits, so I believe they'll be ok...I hope they come again next year, as they keep the dreaded groundhogs away.

My first encounter with a baby fox....

Aw, how heartbreaking! I was raised in the country, and there were always some sort of wild animal showing up at the dog's feed bowl... Too much construction is moving them, and destroying their habitat-and it's not their fault! They just want to survive. I understand your plight. Wish there was another way to handle it.
