We are building an addition next March/April & I will have to move about 12 daylilies. The ground may still be froze at that time & the lilies may not be visible through the ground yet. Is it possible to dig them now & keep them through the winter some how or do I wait until March & dig them up then? Any advice would be helpful

If you can dig them now and plant them somewhere else on your property that would be best. Lilies are very hardy. I don't know how they would do for you in such cold weather in pots. Here is SC I can do that just fine. I have a couple of places around my gardens that I can stick a plant for a while until I have another bed ready for them. If you do dig them now, cut them back to about 10 inches. That will leave enough leaf to feed the tubers and they will not look so ratty. Linda B |

I agree with yardgranny- go ahead and dig them up now, and relocate somewhere else. They are very hard to kill, and fall is my favorite time to divide daylillies. |

Thank you, that's a great idea. Of course I'm dreading digging up & relocating 12 plants for only 1 year then relocating them again. I have a few Hosta's to move too, I assume I can do the same thing with them. Thanks again! |

I have kept daylilies in a large tub with just a little dirt and a lot of mulch for almost a year. I'm in the deep south and just about everything will survive a winter, but if you kept them from freezing I think they would come back just fine. |

And yes do the Hostas the same way. LB |

I hope that you have success, imtay. Thanks for the info, guys. I want to move some myself. I was given some really pretty ones that look like a double, but they did not bloom a bit this year. I fear they need dividing. I have been guessing that the fall is the best time. |
