My perennial plants seem to be browning and dying. It starts off with maybe one stalk, but then the whole plant ended up going. When I pull up the dead plant it is INFESTED with pill bugs. I did some reasearch and it said that they eat dead or decaying roots, not healthy roots. Is this a soil problem or is this a pill bug problem? I see more things heading south (dying) and I want to be able to save what I can. Thanks so much.

My guess is there is something- fungus, powdery mildew, virus, root rot, etc. that is killing your plants- the pillbugs are capitalizing on the dead roots. How damp/dry is your soil? What are your watering practices? I would add lots of compost to the soil, for a couple of reasons: 1. It will help to improve the drainage and/or water retention. 2. Adds the nutrients that the plants need to stay healthy and be able to fight off diseases. 3. Gives the pillbugs something else to munch on ![]() Also try watering DEEPLY once or twice a week, instead of shallowly every day. Avoid getting leaves wet in the evenings and only water either in the morning or evening. Hope that helps

There is no such thing as a pill bug "problem". That would be analogous to the canary in the coal mine being labeled a "canary problem". |
