Hello everyone,

I just constructed a beautiful new ceder deck that is 14' x 14'. I also just purchased a fantastic, straight stack terra cotta style chimenea (attached below is a very accurate match of my chimenea). It is fairly sizable standing on a wrought iron 3-legged stand which boosts it up to roughly 46" tall. The chimenea itself has two big openings in it for heat. The openings are opposite each other.

What I'm looking to do is have small fires on my deck in this chimenea. From what I've been told (and the research I've done) is that this is OK to do and the unit will get hot, as long as it is on the wrought iron stand, it should not heat up enough to get the stand hot enough to burn the deck. I've seen people put these stands on small tiles to ensure that even if the iron does get hot, it won't harm the deck. I feel like that is a route I may take as it is cheap insurance and a quick and easy fix.

The other issue I'm curious about is embers popping out of the the chimenea. I worry that the wood I'm using will pop and crackle and possible scorch (burn?) the deck. I've heard I could put down a mat of some sort that would not burn if hot embers hit it, but I'm not sure where I'd find one. Or I suppose I could possible create a screen that I could put up while a fire is going to keep the embers from popping out?

Does anyone have any experience with either of these two big issues mentioned above? Any thoughts on this would be great.

Thanks!

Our neighbors were going on vacation so they cleaned the embers from their indoor fireplace, put them in a bucket on their deck and left. The whole house burned down! I would never want any fire anywhere near to a deck.
