I am going to give it a try, here's my plan

I will be using a 24"-28" wide x 24"-28" deep plastic barrel cut in half.

Going to put about 8" good compost in the bottom cover with 2" compost and when they sprout and start to the top I will be adding old hay all the way to the top and hope I have a barrel full of potatoes ? I Hope I Hope, Later Guilt trip

I've got some potatoes in the ground now. I was wondering if anyone could tell me how long it takes from the moment you plant them, to the moment you dig them up. 60days? 90?

The tops on mine are just now dying off.

Dame, that's the usual way to know that your potatoes are "done" -when the tops die off.

Container potatoes sounds like a great idea! Potatoes are shallow rooted plants, so a 12 inches deep container should be adequate.

Good luck with that. Please let us know how it goes. I checked for taters yesterday under one of the dying tops and found nothing. Im going to give it a little longer and cross my fingers.

The time to plant fall potatoes for zone 9 is NOW! I've been thinking of planting some too. Don't want to wait too long! I'm thinking harvest time is usually about 90 days. I like your idea. Sounds almost too easy!

I read this when searching on how to grow potatoes. They can be grown in card board boxes as containers and then torn apart instead of digging them out.
See the details here - http://jugalbandi.info/2007/08/potatoes/ or here http://jugalbandi.info/2008/07/basil-infused-potat oes-and-peas/
I have not tried this way but seems to be easy.
