Hello,

I'm having a problem with some wasp-like insects. They seem to be coming from nests that were dug into my grass. When I go out into my yard in the morning I see a hundred of these wasps flying around. I also noticed a couple dozen small holes in the dirt and grass around my yard. I assume that these wasps are coming from the holes. Does anyone know what these insects actually are and how to get rid of them?
Thanks!
Bob

Bob, I think these are called Digger Wasps. Do a search using Digger Wasps or just wasps as there is a lot of information out there on these insects. Linda B

i believe what you are describing are cicada killers (digger wasps)...if so they are 2 to 3 inches long...they only come out from late july to the end of august...the female goes and finds cicadas, paralizes them, and them drags them to her egg. when the egg hatches, the baby eats it and the cycle continues...cicada killers are not aggressive like bees...they tend to fly really low to the ground, and if they are there this summer, they will be back next summer...only the female stings, the males bite....they wont kill you, unless you are allergic to bee stings....i live in northern nj and see them every year...i finally got the nerve up to kill one cuz it got a little too close to my daughter...i used a batmitten racket...they say you can call an exterminator to kill them, but they will be back next year...another idea is to poor gasoline down the holes, or just soak the crap out of the holes with water....another way is to put an empty mayonase jar ontop of the hole at night, and in the morning when the bee comes out of its hole, it will get trapped and die cuz they arent that samrt to go back in the hole where its cooler....heres a great website devoted to these ugly things.....and dont worry...august is almost over
