I live in the Ozarks. I planted Banana Trees, this year, outside. Does anyone know how I can "Winter Over" the trees,to plant outside next year. I don't think they'll make it through our Ozark Winter. I use to keep them in pots, on my sunporch, But, they take up too much room. HELP....... |

It depends a lot on the variety. Some varieties are very hardy. I grow some here that can take temperatures down to 15 with no mulching. |

A friend gave me two trees, years ago. I don't know what type they are. They keep having babies, now I have 5 of them to find a way to keep them over the winter. I just don't have room on my sunporch,anymore. Someone told me to just dig them up, and place them dirt and all in a plastic trash can,and put them in the garage.???????? |

That'll work too. They're pretty tough and they don't mind going dormant in the winter. You could always try putting some of the pups outside and see if they make it. It's best to do it in the spring though so they can have an entire growing season to get established. The pups can get out of control. I have a couple dozen pots with them now just from this last spring, and to think the nurseries are trying to get 50-60 dollars for one. |

I know, that's about what they sell for around here. I guess that's why I'm so protective with them. I would love to share them with my neighbors. Quite a few people have stopped and asked about them. I think that I'll put them in burlap, then in a plastic trash can . Thanks for your help. |

I put mine in the house this weekend . I didn't know they needed to go dormant. I can put them in my side room we only heat a couple of times during the winter for family get togethers. Would only be Christmas ,New years and maybe two others. It will get down to maybe 30 degrees. Mine one is a red leafed and the other is a dwarf. Should they be in the dark or light? |
