Can St. Augustine be overseeded with Bahia?

I have 10,000 sf of St. Augustine and weeds in Central Florida. I want to get rid of the weeds, but I swear I will never plant another plug or piece of sod, so I got this idea to mix in a seedable grass. Bahia looks like the best match, from photos and descriptions I've seen. I have sunny areas and lightly shaded areas. Grass gets cut pretty high and clippings stay on lawn.
The sprinkler system is getting renovated soon. It's raining a lot lately, and I want to take advantage of that "free" irrigation and the heat to get new areas started.
I'm thinking of starting to go organic with the supposedly very effective system of compost-to-add-beneficial-microbes, corn meal-for-fertilizer, vinegar-for-herbicide plan, but I also know that the crabgrass that I pull will grow back and overtake anything that's trying to establish itself. should I wait till spring, after a crabgrass preemergent no-plant period is over, and the crabgrass is either dead or I kill it with RoundUp or vinegar?

Anybody out there have a clue?

The extension service program is a great way to get local advice - people that can tell you if Bahia is the right grass for you and when is the best time to reseed it.

Here is a link to their offices, pick the one closest to you and give them a call.

By the way, corn gluten meal is an organic pre-emergent.

Good luck!

Thank you... talked to the local extension service today... somewhat helpful, but not completely.
I know about CGM... just recently read about organic lawn care, but the article that I read on it says that just because it's organic doesn't mean that it will allow bahia seed to grow while suppressing weed seed germination. Not sure if that's what you meant. I'll definitely use it after the redone lawn is established and thick (hopefully not just in my dreams!).

ANY pre-emergent will prevent the seed you sow from germinating as well! Best thing to do (in the case of fescue anyway) is to overseed this fall, and apple the pre-emergant herbicide in the early spring to prevent the crabgrass seed from germinating.
Compost would also be a fertilizer
As for what type of grass- not a clue

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to imply that CGM would suppress weeds while allowing Bahia seed to germinate - no way, CGM doesn't know one seed from another!

Glad you got some help from the extension service. Good luck!
