Broccoli matures during cool weather. Broccoli grows best in fall. Plant the seeds about 90 days before your first chance of frost. You should have a great crop. |

We northerners are rather amused by this talk of starting seeds...especially broccoli...in August! You guys are lucky in some ways. Broccoli takes forever from seeds, but I imagine it's impossible to find plants this time of year. I usually just buy seedlings in the spring. good luck w/the fall crop. |

The tough thing about Spring broccoli is that its seeds require lots of heat and moisture to germinate - a rare combination in the early part of the year. If you want to do Spring broccoli from seed, I recommend putting the seed directly into HOT tap water, and let it stand for a day. Then put them in between the folds of a wet napkin, and keep the napkin warm and wet. They will sprout in three days. Gar-on-teed. I can't do Spring broccoli here because the seedlings don't do well in cold, clammy soil - which is what we have until May - and then it gets too hot in June and they bolt. But it's the perfect Fall crop. They sprout quickly in the hot Summer soil as long as the top 1/2 inch is kept moist. They grow well in the August-September heat and then head up nicely in the cool of October. |

Up here, I get beautiful florets right up until the first severe frost. I've already brushed snow off of the plants, and picked the new florets. Hardy, to say the least. |
