I'm not in the north, but my tomatoes are just starting to turn red (no other colors planted this year). Tons of green ones growing though.

Truth in that, wolf. They will ripen eventually even if the temp's are not hot hot hot, but faster if it's sultry. But patience, friend, patience! Summer is only half over!

Hard to believe, eh? But 'tis so. We have six weeks to go. Tomatoes will continue to ripen even after the first killing frost knocks down the vegetation. Many a year I can testify, I didn't get my first ripe full-size tomato til mid Aug and I'm in zone 6.

Oh my. That's early. I hope you are familiar with our HillBilly Bill's Foolproof Method for Preventing Frost Damage. It could really extend your growing season.

I'm getting some ripe ones, however, earlier this summer I had some disease or insect that's leaving small black spots all over my tomoatoes so there went the first batch. Now that it's under control I'm just now getting some decent ones.
My husband told me last night that someone told him if you have large green tomatoes that aren't turning red you need to quit watering your tomatoes so they'll ripen ???? Anyone heard of this? I thought tomatoes needed plenty of water

Our gardening buddy Bill Mitchell introduced me to it - he's the "hillbilly from Kentucky". Go out early in the morning before the sun comes up and spray your plants down with a water hose. It's just that simple. The tap water will rinse off any frost that may have formed in the chill of the night. Plus it will "warm" the plants so when the sun comes up they won't get a shock.

I got through the last two frosts this Spring using Hillbilly Bill's method. The only slight damage I had was here and there where I missed with the hose.
