I've read some of the other forum topics about strawberries along with the how-to info and I'm still not sure what to do with my first year strawberries this fall (yes I'm thinking ahead) Do I mow/cut the tops off? I get the mulching and trimming runners, it's just the tops I'm confused about. Thanks for any and all advise. Oh yea, they are planted in a bed in zone 5 if either makes a difference.

Well from 1 zone 5 to another...

I never cut the tops off mine, I just cover them with leaves in the fall and let them over winter as they are. Some books or gardeners will tell you to mow them down to renovate the patch, if you decide to do it, it should be done in the first 10 days after harvest. Wait any longer and you will have stunted growth the next season. The same is true for removing "old" plants (3 years or older, it should be done right after harvest, before they send runners. I feed mine once a month after they produce, and twice a month from April to July.

Hope this helps.

Thank you, it did help. I didn't much like the idea of mowing or cutting them so I'll just go with the mulch.
