Hello again,

Quick question...
Although I am already growing lettuce in a washtub (very successful, no snails to be seen) and tomatoes & cucumber in big containers I am now hoping to take it a step further with veggies.
Back in Europe I had a veg garden, but in that respect I am new to growing here in South California.

Does anybody have any suggestions for our dry climate ?
My idea is to be able to have some of my own veg during the wintertime ...

It's going to be a corner of the garden, just a small patch to begin with.

Am off to the farmers market: have decided that I want to try and grow beets (they probably take forever..) and baby potatoes.

Bye for now !

I live in hot, humid Ga., so I can't really help you, but you may want to post this in the vegetable forum. You would probably get a lot more responses.

Yes, the Gardening forum is where you would ask these questions.

The FAQ forums is for questions about using the Garden Guides web site.

Here in So Cal you can grow just about anything you want and we have year round growing season. A little shade cloth to black the mid day sun on the really hot days if needed and your good to go.

Yea we can! I have small beds with peppers and tomatoes right now. Lettuce in the other. Making another for cukes and squash. Plant your beets now, they do take time. We used to plant them where we lived out in the country. Have fun!! Kim

Thanks. I love our seasons. Hot in summer. Yuk! We need it for the fruits and veggies though. Kim

I've learned that some fruit trees do need a few hundred hours of chill. Veggies I'm still learning about, done a lot experimenting and drove a lot of GGers to the point of .....> "" by asking a zillion questions.

it's a lot of fun even though I (well birds and squirrels really ) killed most of my veggies!

I can grow awesome tomatos though! lol

Yep, the sun and wind can be pretty harsh here in Cali!

Rashell, Have you thought of or tried covering your veggies with hardware cloth or maybe cheaper would be aviary wire (which is chicken wire with only 1/2 inch holes) to keep the critters out?

We moved out before I was able to try out what some GGers told me to try. Don't remember if the cloth was mentioned but I'll look into it! Thank you!
