I got some heriloom winter squash seeds to plant for fall. Is it time to plant the seeds yet? Should I plant them right in the ground or start them in peat pots? I'm in Southern Indiana, that's zone 6. |

Normally winter squash is grown in the spring/summer along with everything else. The "winter" part of the squash just means that it keeps for a long time--over winter. There may be enough time yet to grow winter squash from seed. They typically take about 100 days + to grow from seed. But if you have ideal conditions and get lucky with a late frost, and have an early bearing variety, they may produce something. Otherwise, it'll be something nice to try next spring.

Ooops. Maybe I'll save the seed for next spring then. I also got some spinach and radish seeds to sow for fall, but I guess those need to wait till it's cooler. Any other good ideas for fall planting? My cherry tomatoes are already getting poorly looking and won't make it through August, and the bush beans will go too... so I'll have lots of room. |

Here's a thread about fall planting. I think it pretty much covers everything that I can think of. ![]() http://my.gardenguides.com/forums/topic/50859 |
