I know that both birds and squirrels will go after tomatoes. Try surrounding them with small mesh poultry fencing or hardware cloth. I'd try to put it up so that it is easily moved for harvesting, and such

It's probably birds. I caught some redhanded sitting atop my tomato cage, and then I saw the damage to some of the tomatoes which they had been munching on. I'm thinking of trying some bird netting over some of the cages. Since seeing the birds, I have been picking tomatoes as soon as they start to ripen, before they've been hacked away at. I too thought that I had done well in keeping the deer and bunny rabbits out, but that just wasn't good enough. The birds love my gardens so much, they've even built a much used nest this year in one of the foundation bushes. I'm leaving the tomatoes that they've already started munching on... they might as well finish what they've started. As much as I don't like them eating at my garden, I guess I do like birds generally.

I have the same problem with my citrus. I have paper bags on my lemons right now! It works real well for me, but citrus can take several months to ripen where as a tomato takes a couple of weeks at most..so, I don't think bagging them is the right solution for you. I would probably try the material used for making screen doors. Just secure that around and over top the cage.

Thanks for the great ideas. Im going to put something around the 3 I have left tomorrow. I never though about leaving the half eaten ones...maybe if I do, they will finish and not eat the others. I'll let you all know how it goes!
