Hello , I live in Pittsford NY near Rochester. I was wondering if anyone knows where I can purchase the old wind half barrels for planting. I am planning on using several and I need solid long lasting containers. Most of what I have seen in the garden stores seem poorly constructed. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Yes, whiskey barrels from Kmart/Walmart fall apart in about a year or so. The bottoms of whiskey barrels eventually fall out also with the weight, they do not have good drainage. Drilling about 5 holes on the bottom, placing a screen on the bottom with rocks on top will keep your plant from root rot. Good luck.

I found my wine barrels up in northern Ca, in the wine country. Here, in the desert, where it's dry, plants won't rot in them. I've had 5 barrels going for about 10 years. I grow trailing lantana and Vinca in them, because the critters don't like them. There's lots of bunnies here, so I have to be careful what I plant.

I had some wooden ones years ago, but now I have some large black plastic ones that I got from friends who raise horses. They get their feed in them-They are the size of a half whiskey barrel. I drill several holes in the bottom of them, and it takes about 4-40 lb bags of top soil/compost to fill them. Easier to maintain watering & fertilizing needs, I think, but I still plant several things in the ground, too.

I know their not that pretty but you can get 33 or 55 gallon drums from factories around Rochester to use. Theirs a food processing plant on Whitney road I've gotten them from before. The down side is they are plastic and blue or white. When I've used them in the past I've decorated them so you couldn't tell they were plastic.
