Can you crush one of the leaves & smell it? Maybe the scent can help us ID it for you. & you should also post this in the Plant ID section of the forum (above the Mystery Plant Contest) so more GGers will see your plant.

I saw a papaya tree earlier looked similar to your tree & now I just saw this topic created by bugnut (john). I wonder if your tree is a Papaya tree? http://my.gardenguides.com/forums/topic/49550 Also check out Sassafras Sassafras albidum. http://www.clemson.edu/hort/scmg/treeimages3.php not 100% sure though.

It looks like classic Sassafras leaves to me as well. The root beer smell of a crushed leaf is instant unmistakable identification |

I don't see any rounded leaves, Sassafras has two types of leaves on it-especially when young. I don't think it's sassafras. How old is it? If it's sassafras, the roots smell like Root Beer-the leaves smell like File'-as in File' gumbo, and have to be really crushed to get that smell. I make my own file' when I can find someone who will let me pick their leaves |

I have been trying to get familiar with this area of the site, but you all have plants I have never seen or heard of. I think most of you are definately south and west of me and that is probably the problem. Plus i'm still working on my genus, species ???? all that still. Anyway I'm just interjecting for fun.

Well, if that is just one seasons growth I'm pretty sure its not sassafras. I've hunted and dug a bunch of that stuff and pretty sure it doesnt grow that fast. |

Has it been pruned into a tree standard shape or is it natural? |

I'm thinking some sort of fast growing weed. The 2nd pick shows a still fleshy stem-definitely not sassafras. I agree, Sassy trees do not grow fast (at least not THAT fast) |
