Gah! Don't know what's different this year, but the ant population around my house has exploded. They're all over the garden (but seem to have a particular liking for hibiscus), and now they're coming in house and marching across the counters. We've done just about everything short of heavy-duty restricted use pesticides, but that makes me kinda nervous and was wondering if you all know of any home remedies that might keep them away from our eating areas, lol. For now, we sprinkle garlic around the edges, it works a little bit.

My favorite is TerroLiquid Ant killer. Just a small drop on some cardboard placed on their trails. They carry it back to the colony and it kills the queen- POOF! No more ants
It is a pesticide, but since it isn't a spray you really don't have to worry about it getting on food or food prep areas. You can get it Lowes, HD, Wal-Mart, and such.

We've had a terrible ant problem for years, dude, little black ants that thrive in decaying wood. We had a dead maple tree in the front yard where they had developed a major metropolis. We've had good success controlling them indoors with borax to deter their movement, and a spray bottle of ammonia solution when they get through the borax. The ammonia definitely, irrevocably kills them.

We've had a horrible time this year with what I call "sugar ants", the little tiny ones. Outside and inside, even in my pantry. They literally make me nauseous to think about them. I am OCD about keeping my house spotless.

Anyway, we used boric acid all around the outside of the house just a few days and the liquid mentioned by Stereo. They're gone (Knock on wood)! We had tried just the liquid inside to no avail. I think there were just too many of them. The combination of the boric acid and liquid did the trick.

Ants don't like cucumber peelings and shavings of Zest soap. They will move on to some other place.
