I'm trying to find a good recipe for making moss grow on cement. I've seen several different ones and they all sound strange (i.e. mixing moss, beer, and sugar, then pasting it on the rock or cement with a spatula).
Does anyone have a good one that they know works, and whether or not it is difficult to maintain?

Welcome to GG from a fellow Virginian!
I have heard about mixing moss and water in a blender, then painting it on cement. I believe if you keep it in the shade and mist regularly to keep moist it will grow just fine. I personally haven't done that though, so I can't tell you how succesful that technique is.

My ex-boyfriend came back from San Diego in '72 (He was studying Mandarin, without much success) and had wild tales of people who had walled gardens outside their mansions filled with moss...in the middle of what is basically a desert! So I figure, if you can grow it there, it'll grow almost anywhere. (Of course THEY had sprinkler systems!)

My mom had a lake house in Mass., which she sold a few yrs. ago. While we were sprucing it up, I made quite a nice moss garden under some (GORGEOUS!) beech trees. I just found sections of moss in other spots, not needing to go far since it was very wooded, then cut it out and stacked it, just like sod.

I put down some of Mom's homemade compost (mostly old leaves & dirt), then laid the moss down, cutting it to fit around the various stones and larger rocks--this IS New England, y'know! In some of the steeper spots, I made hooks out of old coat hangers and just pressed them down into the soil, anchoring the moss. It took like a charm and some marveled at it, while others said (always with a whine!) "Why don't you pull that up and grow GRASS?!" Heh-heh. It looked gorgeous. And no mowing!

Hey Aurora...I hope you rinse that blender out well afterward! lol
