Hi Everyone,
Maybe I can get some expert advice. I am new to gardening and wanted to start off with something this year. I bought transplants for tomato and peppers - 2 each. When I bought them they were so small so I put the 2 tomato plants in one container and 2 pepper plants in one container. Little did I know at that time that they grow big. Right now I am getting a tomato and a pepper on one of the plants in the containers.
I wanted to know if I could separate the 2 plants in each container now? If so any special instructions I should follow.
Your advice is greatly appreicated.

Hi ptosh,

I'm no expert, but I can tell you my experience. Like you, this is the first year I tried tomatoes and peppers in contains. From what I've seen, they're very hardy and don't need a lot of special care, so I wouldn't be afraid to transplant them. The most popular containers in my area are 5 gallon buckets w/ holes punched in the bottom, one plant per bucket. The most important thing for me is to make sure new transplants get plenty of water, at least every other day, especially in the heat of summer. That helps the roots establish, I think. Also, a generous application of fertilizer when transplanting helps offset shock. I've never had such big productive tomatoes and peppers as in the containers. So far, they're outperforming the plants in the ground. One last thing. I had to cut way down on the fertilizer. In containers it's ultra powerful because it's sort of trapped there at the roots. Not much leaches from the soil.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

well how big ARE the containers?? cause ive been taking care of my moms tomatoes an peppers fer the last 5 years now an i even have some of my own this year (containers only here) i have 3 pepper plants in like a 6-8 i think inch pot its whatr i call a "medium" pot the "big" pot is an 18" that has 3 tomatoes an 5 basils no cages eighter so id think depending on size of pot you could leave them

--yea i fer got what i was gonna say so ill shut now
one last thing if you wanna see pics of my plants thru the garden including tomatoes go herbs then village idiot there in there (pics from yesterday)

Personally I would leave them be. If you think they need more room you can pot the whole shebang into bigger pots.
If you tried to separate them now you would damage a lot of roots in the process, and they probably won't have enough time to recover and produce well before frost.
Hope that helps a little

I do know one thing for sure. The bigger the container, the bigger the plants. I have mine in containers that hold 10 gallons, and they're 4'9" tall and 2.5' wide, caged and staked. Each plant has a dozen large tomatoes/peppers just waiting to ripen and dozens more flowers. In this case, size does matter! ; )
