We always get so disgusted with the long cold springs here because we can't start harvesting vegetables until late August. So this year I figure I'm going to fix mother nature and grow a tomato in my greenhouse. Well, it's now 8 feet tall loaded with tomatoes and threating to topple the greenhouse. And we still don't have any ripe tomatoes. I know one of the problems is that I'm growing it in my orchid greenhouse which is 50% shaded so that may be a problem. I know that holding back water will cause them to ripen when planted in the ground, but anytime it gets less than 2-3 gallons of water a day, it completey wimps out and looks like it's going to croak. Are there any other tricks to get the fruit to ripe? Attachments: ![]() |

I think biyu is on to something. If they are the size that they are supposed to be, and you pick them, then they will be deprived of water, while you can still water the plant to keep it alive. They'll usually ripen inside eventually once picked. |

wish I had a green house... As far as the tomato you just need to be patient and wait if you pick early and let it ripen on the counter you will get tomatoes that taste like store bought.... it set fruit and is doing great the tomato just has not grown enough to start to turn color... just wait you will be glad you did it will taste much better. |

That is huge!! I heard that fertilizing with a lot of nitrogen makes big, tall green plants with almost no fruit. Maybe this is the problem? |
