I have planted Petunias in my flower bed and they are all dying, or so it seems. The greens have turned yellow and they have stopped blooming. I live in Utah, where it is currently very hot and dry, so I water them everyday. I fertilize every week or so. What is happening to my flowers?

What kind of petunias do you have? There are many varieties that are based on growth size and flower habit. Some varieties of petunias prefer container growth while others prefer to sprawl out in a garden. As a general rule all petunias prefer a moist but well drained environment and an area that gets at least six hours of sunlight everyday. Too much shade will cause petunias to stop blooming.

It may help to do a soil test on your garden to determine the proper fertilizer for your soil type.
Petunias also thrive when you snip off the flower blooms (dead heading) that are complete.

I have no idea what kind of Petunias they are...we bought them at walmart. They were doing really well in the beginning, but now as summer progresses, they seem to be dying. They get plenty of sun, and plenty of shade. I wonder if I'm watering too much. I water them daily when I do my hanging baskets.

I'm in zone 9 and my petunias never make a full summer. Mine were planted in March/April, and I have pulled some up just recently, and will be pruning those that are left way back. Sometimes they come back in the fall. Our summers are real hot and humid...when the day temps get in the 90's and stay there, petunias are done.

Watering too much could be a possibility although petunias require a sufficient amount of water. You may also have the type that prefers containers. You could try transplanting a few in a container with fertilizer as a test to see how they fair out. For petunias that prefer containers, we have planted them in a container and then placed the container in the ground. This seemed to extend the life of the petunias throughout the growing season.
