I need help with my castor plants, I have difficulty finding the seeds first, then when I do, I have great difficulty getting them going, out of 20 seeds only two came up, and they are now a whopping 3" tall, Uhhrrrr.... I use ferts, and potting soil and full sun to partial shade. Also how long does it take for these to seed. One other thing I'm looking for ornamental Rhubarb. I'm in Northern, South Caro. Thank you. |

You might be haveing trouble finding the seeds because the are highly toxic and supposed to be fast growing. I do know the need alot of sun and warm weather also they like well drained soil.I hope that helps. |

Welcome, Pickens! I don't what you mean. Someone gave me a pod of seeds. I sowed them in various spots around the yard. I had only one to come up and it grew to a whopping 2 inches. I had no luck with it at all. I have seen ads for it. I'll keep my eye out and when I find a source, I'll let you know. |

Mine were slow this year too, but have now begun to take off. And I have seeds if you want them. Yes, the seeds are hard to find because they are a source of ricin, but you would have to go out of your way to get yourself poisoned. You would need to eat a bunch of seeds to do damage and after that, there are no available antidotes. Plus the seeds are pretty, so I wouldn't want to leave them out around small children. That being said, mine took at least two weeks to sprout and then stayed about 6" tall for another two weeks. They are now about 30" tall and I will post a picture here as soon as it gets lighter outside. Last night, I was toying with the idea of planting some more, but then wondered if there's enough growing season left if they're going to be so slow. Thought about soaking the seeds first ~ never tried that. Also, I've been watering the plants as we have had no rain. Anyhoo ~ if you want seeds, let me know. |

OK ~ here's what they look like now. I am guessing that I planted the seeds around mid-April, so yes ~ slow this year, don't know why. I am just glad to see them (as usual)! Attachments: ![]() ![]() |

A lady down the road has some Castor plants- These things are HUGE!!!!! They must be nearing 12 ft tall with leaves that are 2 ft across. Unfortunately I don't know her to be able to ask what she does...

Yes ~ in the past mine have gotten 10-12 feet tall. By ALL means, don't be shy! Go right up to her door and ask her. People love to have their plants noticed. I have made more friends (and shared more plants and seeds) that way. |

I agree and take cookies so you have something to trade. I will tell people anything they want to know about my plants for some cookies.

the first batch of caster plants a couple years ago came out extremely dark and purple but I'll live with the purple ish-ness of the plant, I'm kinda new at this stuff and not quite sure how to get a hold of someone. ooohhh ya update on the plants, I'd say 4 1/2 inches, and I would like a lot of seeds, kill those pestering bugs. |

Yes ~ my plants are really more red than they look in the picture. Also, I have them in part shade. When it gets so hot (like now ) they don't do as well in full sun.If you want to contact a member here, just click on their name and it will take you to their Profile Page. There you will see a "send a message" tab and just follow that along. I still have seeds for castors if you want them. You are welcome to them. |
