Hi guys...I am Thadd (short for Thaddeus). I live in beaitiful Rolling Hills Estates Ca. We are on the coast on the Palos Verdes Peninsula. If you fly out of LAX and look left, that big hill is our peninsula. I have been gardening most of my adult life. The last 25 or so years has been within a mile or two of the coast in a no-freeze zone. We rarely get over mid 80's in the summer, and in May and June we have to deal with "June Gloom"....The desert heats up, and that pulls the marine layer in about 10 miles, so we can go as long as a month without any significant sunshine...not good for a vegie garden. Because of the less than ideal weather, I have difficulty in getting any kind of a corn crop; i plant in small batches because we have a racoon/possum problem. They like fresh corn as much as I do and will knock the plants over to get to the ears!! I am having tomato problems this year. I have some ripe tomatoes, but they are not big. Varieties I grow include Early Girl, San Diego, Better Boy, Big Beef, Roma, Champion, etc. Last year I had an Early Girl that gave me well over 100 tomatoes. This year I am growing corn, bush beans, herbs (Basil, oregano, cilantro, sage, thyme, parsley), lettuce, beets (yum) carrots, zuchini, yellow crook neck, and I am trying to grow cukes !!!! Another new crop this year is wine grapes. I put in 6 Cabernret francas and merlot plants last year and they are going gangbusters this year. We also have a mini orchard with avocados, plums, apricots, peachs and apples, and my wife keeps our great half acre going with all kinds of flowers. This year we had a neighborhood plant exchange party and it was attended by 20 or 30 people. One couple up the street brought me an English tomato plant, and it is going great guns. This is a fun event. For next years, I will pot up a lot of veggies to give to the neighbors. If I can help anyone with anything, let me know. Thadd Attachments: ![]() ![]() |

WOW! Welcome to Garden Guides. What a variety of crops! I am sure that you will be a wonderful asset to our community. You seem to have knowledge about every kind of veggie and now the grapes. Hmmm. Are you going to try your hand at making a little vino? Welcome and have fun! |
