Hello to all! I have at this point 1 rose bush and it is a Blue Girl Rose. It is my favorite of the roses. This may seem like a odd question but where do I get the seeds from my rose bush? The reason I ask is because in my 30 ish blah! years I have NEVER seen a rose seed in any stores around here! I always see rose bushes but no seeds. Can anyone help me? |

Rose seeds are found in the rose hips which develope on roses that have been left on the bush, not deadheaded after they fade. Once the rose hips turns read or orange it is rady to harvest, the hip is cut open the seeds takenout, washed, and stored in a cold, not freezing enviroment (refridgerator) for about 6 weeks. You can test the viability of the seeds by putting them in a bowl of water, good seeds will sink. The duds float. You can then plant the seeds in a controlled area. It can take up to a year for you to get an actual plant from rose seed. Growing roses from seed is usually done by breeders, or avid rose enthusiasts because it is so time consuming. Which is the top reason you will not find them in stores. You also run the risk of not getting your true rose. Unless carefully bred, the rose from seeds could have genetic traits from a rose 2 or 3 generations back. Hope this helps, I could go on and on if you need more send me a PM Sass |

Thank you for the info! I felt so stupid asking but it just seemed so odd to me that I could not ever remember seeing them in stores. I have had rose bushes before but most die on me. This year I splurged a bit and bought my Blue girl rose. It hit me that I save seeds from all my other plants why not my roses. I was just outside checking on all my plants and I may have to spray my rose bush before I get the yearly pests on them. It looks like they have already started on afew of the leaves. I was not sure how to get ahold of you other than here since I am new to this forum. Thanks Again for the info! |
