I planted marigolds all along the edge of my garden to keep the slugs out, and now they are stripping the marigolds. I'm losing about one a night, along with my vegetables. Nasty creatures!! Last night we fed the outdoor cat and the slugs were in the catfood bowl before the cat was even done eating. I've heard alot of remedies from bowls of beer to eggshells to keep slugs away but nothing has worked for us. Anyone got any good non-toxic remedies against slugs? |

diatomacious earth is supposed to be a very good slug deterrent. It slices up their bodies so they don't go near it. salt also works, but I don't think it would be wise to be putting salt in your gardens

I think that there are organic snail and slug baits on the market. That works pretty good, but you have to keep reapplying. See if you can find some of that. They also say putting a dampened board down on the ground and at night the slugs get under it. Early in the morning you get the board with all the slugs on it and get rid of them. Then you can use the salt away from the flowers. |

I got some diatomaceous earth and put that down, we'll see how it works. It sounds pretty horrible - I guess it slices up the little slug bodies and makes them dehydrate and die. I don't like killing things, but they don't seem to mind killing my marigolds and eggplants and tomatoes and dahlias and........... |

I don't get much pleasure out of killing the little buggses either, even if they do eat my precious plants. Except for cockroaches. I do derive pleasure from killing cockroaches. I learned that in New Orleans, where the cockroaches are so tough - when you step on them, they make a crunching noise with their legs, wait for you to move on, then scurry away unharmed. Just kidding. A word of warning about diat. earth: it doesn't work when it gets wet. The bugs have to inhale it for it to be effective. |

When I lived there, when you stepped on them, they snapped their "fingers," wait for you to move on, and then scurry away unharmed. Maybe they are kin to the Louisiana roaches! |

Well i got to say that i get a good deal of pleasure from killing off the slugs in my neck of the woods. I like bees and butterflys and can deal with moths and dragon flys but those slugs just make me so mad i put out beer every night for weeks last summer. I killed a whole army of them before i won that battle.I was out numbered and souronded but i still won.

Funny you should mention New Orleans roaches. I worked in a restaurant in the French Quarter for a year and had numerous personal battles with the creatures. The restaurants there aren't dirty, but the buildings are all so old, and there are so many restaurants and so much trash that the roaches and rats are everywhere. I once had one fly up and land on my neck while I was working the broiler station, and another time one fell out of a ceiling vent and landed with a loud "clunk" on my cutting board. AAaaaAAGh!!! Those things are gross!!! |
