Water gardens as water retention areas

The patio will be next to the house so we need to be mindful of drainage. He wants to put a drain line under the patio and run it the side yard to drain into the swail. It occurred to me that we could run it into a water garden/retention type of area and use it for irrigation. Does anyone know if this would work? Anyone done anyting like this?
